| Introduction |
Locked away in its Himalayan fortress, Tibet has long exercised a unique hold on the imagination of the West: 'Shangri-La', 'the Rooftop of the World', Tibet is mysterious in a way that few other places are. The scenery has a majesty and grandeur that are spellbinding, the religious monuments and practices are overwhelmingly picturesque and moving, and the Tibetan people are welcoming and wonderful. The majority of its land rests above 4000 meters (13,000 feet) and is surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides. The awe-inspiring Himalayas are the highest in the world, as is the never-ending Tibetan plateau. It is a destination for rugged adventurers as well as spiritual pilgrims.
TAR (Tibet Autonomous Region) lies beyond the main Himalayan range, and neighbors with Xinjiang, Qinhai, Sichuan and Yunnan. It is also bordered with Burma, India, Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal. The massive Tibetan plateau, at an average altitude of 4500m above sea level, is guarded on all sides by towering mountain ranges: the Himalayas separates Tibet from India, Nepal and Bhutan to the south, the Karakoram from Pakistan to the west and the Kunlung from Xinjiang to the north. The plateau is also the birthplace to some of the greatest rivers on this planet, the Yangze, Mekong, Yellow and Salween rising in the east, and the Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej and some feeder rivers of the Ganges in the west near Mt. Kailash.
Kham is the Tibetan name for the eastern third of the Tibetan plateau. It presents an amazing contrast to the landscape of Brahmaputra Valley, and is characterized by extremely rugged mountains from NW to SE, broken by deep alpine gorges. Eroded narrow valleys and deep gorges have been cut by the Salween, Mekong, and Yangze rivers and their tributaries, therefore the name traditionally given to the region of Kham: "four rivers and six ranges". The culture and history of Kham are closely connected to those of central Tibet.
Amdo is the region in which the Tibetan population has been most exposed over the centuries to cultural contacts with neighboring people: Mongol; Han; Hui; Tu, the grassland region around the upper reaches of the Yellow, Min Rivers in the NW, and the deep gorges of the Gyarong. |
