This little town lies on a ridge, 75 km. away
from the terai (plains) and has a charm of its own though
it is devoid of any major attractions. It once enjoyed major
trade with the mountainous regions but with the road to Hile
now pitched, goods pass right through. It was also once a
recruiting center for the British army, which still retains
some Gurkha regiments abroad. The first portion that appears
in your sight is the bus station, the only flat land here.
Then it is all up hill from south to north up thes ridge.
Some decent accommodation is available with restaurants. There
is a café at the top end of the town. Dhankuta offers
pleasant walks and good views of mountains if you climb a
bit.
