Dharan was the launching ground for the Everest
reconnaissance expeditions in the early 1950's before the conquest
in 1953. But is has been more widely known for being the recruiting
center of the British Gurkhas. It lost some of its importance
when the British removed the recruitment center but then the
BMH (British Hospital) was converted into the B.P.Koirala Memorial
Institute of Medical Sciences, one of the best in the country.
It doubles as a hospital and college. Near by is the 18- hole
golf course, which is in private hands today.
Barah Chhetra is an important Hindu pilgrimage site
and is only an hour's drive away. The Barahi temple lies at
the confluence of the two rivers, Sapta Koshi and Kokaha.
This shikara style temple of Lord Vishnu in his boar incarnation
attracts a large number of Vishnu worshippers. It is believed
Vishnu came down to earth in the form of a boar and destroyed
Hiranyakshya at this very spot. Colorful folks from shamans
to Indian pilgrims converge here to pay homage to the one
who saved the world from the likes of Hinranyakshya. Another
holy site is the Danta Kali temple built on the spot where
Sati Devi's tooth came to rest when it fell off while Lord
Shiva was mournfully wandering about with his dead consort's
body. You can also visit the Pindeswar Mahadev with its Shiva
lingam.
For trekkers, Charles' Point is an interesting excursion
from where the terai, Dhankuta and the Sapta Koshi river can
all be seen. Named after Prince Charles following his visit
here, this spot is popular among the youth of Dharan. However,
from Dharan the most rewarding trip to take is towards the
jungles of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. This reserve is close
to Inarwa, which is an hour's drive from Dharan. This is truly
a bird watchers' paradise as well as the last reserve where
wild buffaloes still roam freely.
Dharan lies in the terai (plains) and can be reached by flying
to Biratnagar first and taking the 41 km road north to the
town. Flights leave daily for Biratnagar from Kathmandu and
there are also daily buses from Gangabhu Bus Station. It is
an overnight journey by bus to Dharan reaching town in the
early hours of the morning. It is 539 km by road from Kathmandu.
Many of them go on to Dhankuta and Hile. The forests around
Dharan are interesting to the bird watcher. Dharan town itself
does not offer much to the visitor but there are many interesting
places to visit around it.
