Gokyo lies in the Everest region and is popular for the
stupendous views of the mountains. At 4,750m Gokyo is situated
at a very high altitude and is a small village on the shores
of Gokyo lake. There are a few lodges here. To get a more
fabulous view climb Gokyo Ri (5350m) which is a small peak
above the lake. The two hour climb rewards you with a superb
view of Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse
and Tawachee, four of which are eight thousanders. There are
many lakes in this region that can be visited. Other small
peaks can also be climbed to enjoy views of more mountains
provided you have time.
Gokyo can be reached after a four-day trek from Namche
Bazaar, but it is of utmost importance to get yourself
acclimatized around Namche Bazaar before you embark
on the trek. At least three days should be spent taking short
hikes around Namche for acclimatization.
