Another important entry point for tourists is the dusty
town of Kakarbhitta. This town has not developed much in the
last twenty years except for the coming up of decent accommodation
to replace the bamboo huts of yesteryears. It even boasts
of hotels with bath- tubs and TV in the rooms. Buses leave
for almost every corner of Nepal from here. Hence you hear
the constant drone of buses leaving from the bus station,
which is in the middle of town. The shopping area is right
next to the station but a more popular shopping town is Dhulabari,
which is further inland along the highway. Kakarvitta is the
last stop within Nepal on the way to Darjeeling, Siliguri
and further on to Assam in India. It is 610 km by road from
Kathmandu.
The only place of interest around this town is the tea plantation,
which stretches across the plains and employs several hundred
people. A longer excursion could be made to Antu Danda in
Ilam. The road goes up to a place called Chhipitar from where
it is a short walk to Antu Danda. This viewpoint at 1,677m
is ideal for viewing sunrise and sunsets.
