| Namche Bazaar at 3,440m lies along the Everest
Base Camp trek. It is the head quarters of the Khumbu region.
The National Park Head Quarters is also here. Since the sixties
Namche has come a long way. You can eat pizzas, buy film or
postcards and souvenirs. There is even a post office and a dental
clinic at your service. Trekking equipment can also be hired
here if you did not arrive fully prepared. There was a construction
boom in the '90s so there is plenty of accommodation.
Namche lies in the old trade route to Tibet and most sherpas
around here were traders. Today sherpas have taken to farming
potatoes and barley along with vegetables. But a far better
earning comes from catering to tourists. All kinds of souvenirs
can be bought in Namche but you may not get the best bargains.
