| Rara Lake (3,062m) one of the least disturbed
areas and is the largest lake in Nepal. The pristine landscape
around here is unique and worth visiting. The circuit of the
lake is about 13km and worthwhile. The water of the lake reaches
a depth of 170m. In 1975, it was designated a national park
(Rara National Park) and has an abundance of birds, flowers
and other wildlife. Of the animal kingdom, Himalayan Tahr,
Serow, Goral, Musk Deer, Himalayan bear and monkeys
(Rhesus and Langur) are found here. The lake harbors migrating
water- fowl, fish and the delightful otters.
The lake is surrounded by light cedar forests and lies in
the remote northwestern region of Nepal. The camping grounds
are on the northern side of the lake near the National Park
Headquarters. Cooking has to be done on kerosene, which you
have to carry along since use of firewood is strictly banned.
Don't look for accommodation or provisions here. All requirements
including tents and food should be carried with you.
The easiest way to reach Rara Lake is to catch a flight to
Jumla in western Nepal. The flight takes off from the western
town of Nepalgunj. This would mean catching two flights if
you are starting from Kathmandu (fly to Nepalgunj). Or you
could take a night bus to Nepalgunj. There is also the possibility
of walking all the way to Jumla from Surkhet. The trek begins
from Jumla and takes 4 days. This is one of the difficult
treks as you need to be self- reliant. But this is pure wilderness
with no settlements around and one of the least visited by
tourists. That itself may be the attraction that draws you.
