| According
to current estimates, Nepal's population stands at around 25
million, with a growth rate of 2.7 per cent. The capital, Kathmandu,
is the largest city with more than 900,000 people, although
the population of the entire Kathmandu Valley is about 2,000,000.
The growth
rate is higher in the Terai than in the mountains, but this
is because many people are migrating in search of land and
job opportunities. The high growth rate despite high rates
of infant mortality and a life expectancy of only 57years
exerts enormous pressure on Nepal's delicate ecology.
