Dolphin watching is a game of patience. It may be a
while before these river mammals make their appearance. They
are among the endangered species and in great danger of vanishing
from the face of the earth. They are found along the Narayani,
Koshi and Karnali rivers. They do not exist in large numbers
as they have been hunted and killed indiscriminately by local
people. The oil that can be extracted from them is valued for
its medicinal properties.
They are delightful creatures to watch, but difficult to
photograph as they are constantly bobbing into and out of
sight. There are better chances of seeing them in calmer waters
and the local guides are aware of where they are usually seen.
At Koshi Tappu they are mostly seen near the Koshi Barrage
and at Karnali near the bridge. They are known as Gangetic
Dolphins.
