After a lot of climbing the trail takes you to the protected Barun valley. From here it's a rough trek past yak pastures and glaciers to the foot of Makalu.

Note
Be careful of altitude gain and hence altitude sickness at some sections of this trek; namely, from Tashigaon to Khongma and Yangle Kharka to Merek.
This trek visits the Barun valley, one of the most remote and unfrequented parts of Nepal. The Barun valley is part of a huge international protected area under an agreement between Nepal and China.
The trek enters the Makalu-Barun National park, where you will have to pay a Rs. 1000 conservation fee.

Highlights
The trek takes you through a pass at 1860m near the village of Bhotebas to offer a spectacular view of the Chhamlang, Makalu and Jaljale Himal.
The trail also crosses the Shipton La pass at 4216m. Eric Shipton and Hillary used this route in 1952, and hence the name.
The Makalu Base Camp offers a beautiful view of the south face of Makalu. A small climb from the base camp offers a spectacular panorama of Peak 6, Peak 7, Baruntse (7220m), Everest and Lhotse.
