After
a lot of climbing the trail takes you to the protected
Barun valley. From here it's a rough trek past yak pastures
and glaciers to the foot of Makalu.
| Note |
| • |
Be careful of altitude
gain and hence altitude sickness at some sections
of this trek; namely, from Tashigaon to Khongma
and Yangle Kharka to Merek. |
| • |
This trek visits
the Barun valley, one of the most remote and unfrequented
parts of Nepal. The Barun valley is part of a huge
international protected area under an agreement
between Nepal and China. |
| • |
The trek enters the
Makalu-Barun National park, where you will have
to pay a Rs. 1000 conservation fee. |
Highlights |
| • |
The trek takes you through
a pass at 1860m near the village of Bhotebas to offer
a spectacular view of the Chhamlang, Makalu and Jaljale
Himal. |
| • |
The trail also crosses
the Shipton La pass at 4216m. Eric Shipton and Hillary
used this route in 1952, and hence the name. |
| • |
The Makalu Base Camp offers
a beautiful view of the south face of Makalu. A small
climb from the base camp offers a spectacular panorama
of Peak 6, Peak 7, Baruntse (7220m), Everest and Lhotse. |
