You can sample
the crowded and fascinating shopping streets in the oldest part
of Kathmandu as well as some of the city's oldest temples.

The
crowded street of Makhan Tole, which is a shoppers' delight,
selling thangkas, paintings and clothes. |

The
10th century kneeling statue of Garuda opposite the Taleju
temple, and the Tana Deval temple nearby. |

A
short walk away from Indra Chowk is Kel Tole with one
of Kathmandu's most important and ornate temple - the
Seto (White) Machhendranath Temple. This temple is sacred
to both the Hindus and the Buddhists. |

Close
to this temple is the small, triple roofed tantrik temple
of Lunchun Lunbun Ajima.
6. The 14th century 'Kichandra Bahal at Kilagal Tole with
the famous 'child eating demon'. |

The
Nara Devi Temple dedicated to goddess Kali at Kilagal
Tole itself, and hidden away across the road, the Narsingha
Temple of Lord Vishnu. |

magnificent 'postage stamp window' at the Nara Devi corner.
This gorgeous carved wooden window of a nondescript modern
building became famous when it got printed as postage
stamp issued in 1978. |

You can visit
some very ancient bahals (dwellings for Buddhist monks), an
important Buddhist stupa and a number of ancient and important
stone works.

legendary 15th century stupa and Shiva's Nateshwar temple
at the centre of Tahiti Tole square. |

two ancient bahals - Musya Bahal and Chusya Bahal further
down the road. |

The
Rani Pokhari lake,the gate to which is opened just once
a year on the festival of Deepawali. |

Nepal's
first school - the Bhanu Bhakta School. |

Kathmandu's
busiest junction with a 6 roads crossroads called the
Asan Tole. Nearby is the Annapurna Temple. |

The
Ugratara Temple, praying at which is said to cure sore
eyes. Close by is a lump of wood said to cure toothaches.
It has thousands of coins nailed into it, the act of which
supposedly gets rid of the toothache! |

beautiful 10th or 11th century four armed figure of Vishnu
housed in the Ikha Narayan Temple. |

5th or 6th century 60 cm statue of Buddha. |

The
Kathesimbhu Stupa just south of Tahiti Tole. In its courtyard
is a 1650 copy of the great Swayambunath. |

Other Face of Kathmandu |

This tour
takes you to the lesser-known part of Kathmandu. The biggest
attraction is to be a part of the daily life of a common Nepali
and the absence of tourists back to Pokhara.

The highly decorated Bhimsen temple, guarded by a brass
lion on a pillar along with two white painted lions. Bhimsen
is supposed to watch over traders and artisans. |

The
triple roofed, 17th century Jaisi Deval Temple standing
on a seven level base. This Shiva temple has some mildly
erotic carvings on some of the temple struts. |

The
Ram Chandra Temple notable for tiny erotic scenes on the
roof struts. |

The
Adko Narayan Vishnu Temple, one of the four most important
Vishnu temples of Kathmandu. |
