Cho Oyu, lies 30km north west of Everest and is part of the
boundary wall formed by the Himalayas between Nepal and Tibet.
It is situated at the head of the Gokyo valley.
An Austrian expedition made the first ascent of Cho Oyu in 1954.
On the 19th of October, at 3 p.m. Herbert Tichy, Sepp Jochler
and a Sherpa named Pasang stood on the summit. This peak is
considered the easiest of the eight thousanders and hence its
popularity is second only to Mt Everest.
Mountaineers commonly climb Cho Oyu from Nepal and slip into
Tibetan territory, the route being easier on the other side
of the border. But Chinese authorities have got wind of the
illegal climbs and have been known to accost climbers on the
peak demanding fees amounting to US $ 2000/-. The climbers then
have to turn back or pay the fees.
