Some Interesting Facts
60 million years ago, Nepal was an expanse of water, a part of the Mediterranean Sea.
Nepal's mountain formation started after the great collision of the Indo-Australian plate with the Eurasian continent.
The mountains continued to rise, the gradients became steeper, and the new rivers formed, cut deep into the terrain.
Continual upheaval between the two plates led to the formation of east-west valleys and lakes.
The ultimate outcome was the formation of four major mountain systems incised with numerous gorges and ridges.
The mountains of Nepal are still growing! Which is why there are landslides, erosion, silt-laden rivers and the omnipresent possibility of earthquakes.
