Hiunchuli
is part of the Annapurna range and was discovered by Jimmy Roberts,
the father of commercial trekking. It is connected to the east
face of Annapurna South. There are three major trekking peaks
within the Annapurna Sanctuary, so named by Roberts as the area
was held sacred by the local inhabitants. They are Tent Peak,
Fluted Peak and Hiunchuli.
Hiunchuli is considered one of the most difficult of trekking
peaks. It was first summited in October 1971 by an American
Peace Corps Expedition under the leadership of Craig Anderson.
The approach road to these peaks is common. All treks start
and end in Pokhara. The drive or flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara
being short makes it is possible to start the trek the same
day. At Sarangkot you are greeted by a gorgeous panoramic view
of the mountains. Here you encounter Chhetri people and move
on to Tanchok Potana and New Bridge (Naya Pul). As you pass
the Modi Khola (Khola = river) the Annapurna South and Hiunchuli
come into view. New Bridge is a suspension bridge through which
the route passes. Next stop is Chomrong with a river of the
same name. The path leads through a forest of bamboo and Rhododendron.
There are many lodges along the way and many streams to cross.
Finally on the sixth day you arrive at Hiunchuli base camp.
