Very
often an expedition on its way to climb a major peak makes an
excursion to a lesser peak as a means to achieve peak fitness.
In 1953 the Everest Expedition that included Tenzing, Evans
and Wylie climbed Island Peak. A year earlier, Eric Shipton
had given it the name "Island Peak".
It lies in the Khumbu region and is connected to Lhotse Shar.
Surrounded by such giants as Nuptse and Lhotse, the view from
Island Peak is inspiring as Baruntse, the Amphu Peaks and Amadablam
fill the landscape. The trek starts as the usual Everest Base
Camp trek but diverges from Tsuro Og. Going right from here
the trail passes through Dingboche and goes on to Chhakhung.
Base camp is usually set up at Pareshaya but caution must be
taken, as there are possibilities of avalanches during heavy
snowfall. From Chhakhung the trek passes by the southern bank
of the Lhotse glacier and arrives at the Imja glacier. It then
leads through a lake- bed that is hemmed in by the Lhotse and
Imja glaciers.
It is possible to reach the summit and return the same day starting
from Pareshaya Base Camp. But fitness and proper acclimatization
play a key role.
