This
trek offers more than just peaks and scenic delights. The trail
passes through the famous pilgrimage site of lake Gosainkunda.
A large number of pilgrims arrive here enduring the hardships
of trekking in mountainous regions they are not quite used to,
and take a dip in the freezing waters of the lake.
Paldor Peak (5,896m) lies at the foot of Ganesh Himal, north
west of Kathmandu. The starting point for the trek is the closest
among all the treks as it lies only an hours' drive away from
Kathmandu. Trekking begins from Sundarijal, which lies at the
foot of the Shivapuri hills. The trail passes through the serene
landscape of grassland and forest of oak, pine and Rhododendron.
This is also the route for the Langtang trek.
Past the forests and farms you reach the holy lake of Gosainkunda
(4,600m). It is best to spend time here for acclimatization
by going for day hikes around the surrounding area. The view
is awesome with such giant peaks as the Annapurna, Manaslu,
Langtang and Ganesh in sight.
From here the trail heads towards the foot of Ganesh Himal among
craggy hillsides. You finally reach base camp at 4,580m, which
lies below the Paldor glacier. Another day should be spent here
acclimatizing as it is of utmost importance for everyone's safety.
The climax of the trip comes with the ascent of Paldor peak
and you are rewarded with an exciting view of different ranges
of peaks from Mt Machhapuchhre in the Annapurnas to the towering
peaks of the Khumbu. You even see a mountain in Tibet called
Shisha Pangma beside the barren hills of the Tibetan plateau.
The trek ends in the most pleasant way with an easy hike down
to Trishuli Bazaar through Tiru Danda and Pansing Bhanjyang.
From here it is only a five-hour drive back to Kathmandu where
you started.
